NTD began to eat an opened oyster. She liberally smothered it with Worcester sauce, Tabasco and pepper and just before she poured the contents of the shell into her mouth she laughed and said, âNo need for salt. I like it that you mentioned Bali. Do you know I love Indonesia, the food, the people the climate. Have you ever been to Indonesia?â Again, I felt embarrassed that I had not, NTD seemed so worldly and made me feel so drab and suburban.

Music began to play from somewhere within the Hall and as we were no more than 20 metres or so away from some of the opened windows it was clearly audible. What surprised me was that it was one of my favourite pieces of classical music and the only piece of music that I can say with certainty that I would like played at my funeral. It was the second movement of Philip Glassâs violin concerto, which begins very softly. Perhaps what light breeze there was that night blew the hypnotic piece just that bit closer to us. I have heard the piece many hundreds, perhaps even thousands of times, but I never tire of listening to it. Without either of us needing to say anything we both sat and listened. Just as the recording moved into the third movement Peter appeared from the kitchen door and began to move slowly towards us trying to carry what looked like an earthen pot â what I later realised was the pasta course. It was only then that I saw there was a printed menu on a small silver card-holder sitting near the oyster tray. The menu read as follows:
